Wastewater Treatment

Preliminary treatment, primary clarification, biological processes, secondary clarification, solids handling, disinfection, sampling, compliance, and troubleshooting.

Use this page as a study checklist.

For your actual exam, open the current state candidate handbook or need-to-know criteria. This guide teaches operating reasoning; it does not claim to reproduce a protected exam.

01

Track load through the plant

Relate flow, BOD/COD, solids, dissolved oxygen, return rates, wasting, and final effluent.

02

Read biological signals

Use DO, MLSS, SVI, settling observations, microscopy where applicable, and process trends together.

03

Control solids inventory

Understand RAS/WAS purpose, sludge age concepts, clarifier loading, and symptoms of poor settling.

04

Respond from evidence

Verify data, compare trends, inspect equipment, protect compliance, and avoid a dramatic change from one reading.

A better 45-minute study block

  1. Read one concept and write the operating purpose in your own words.
  2. Write the measurement, alarm, or observation that would show the process is drifting.
  3. Write the safest first response and what must be verified before changing the process.
  4. Take 10 targeted questions and review every explanation, including correct answers.
  5. Save the weak topic in your notes and repeat it with operator math where applicable.
