Illinois water and wastewater operator certification

Illinois EPA runs separate drinking-water and wastewater certification programs. Drinking water includes an Operator-in-Training route; wastewater has its own class and exam system.

Decision 1

Choose the work before choosing the exam.

Drinking water

An Operator-in-Training certificate can be the first step after passing a drinking-water exam when all experience has not yet been met.

  • Treatment: source water, process control, filtration, disinfection, laboratory work.
  • Distribution: pumps, storage, pressure, mains, valves, sampling, flushing.

Wastewater

Illinois certifies municipal and industrial wastewater operators and offers a voluntary collection-system certification program. Facility requirements determine the needed level.

  • Treatment: biological and physical processes, solids, disinfection, compliance.
  • Collections: sewers, lift stations, force mains, I&I, cleaning, overflow response.

Do not pay yet: Do not confuse the drinking-water OIT route with wastewater certification. They are separate program rules.
Decision 2

Build the application record in the right order.

Decision 3

Study from the state outline, then diagnose weak operator topics.

Illinois exam note

Use Illinois EPA’s current application and examination schedule. Wastewater candidates need the admission letter and identification for the scheduled exam.

Decision 4

Make the job produce qualifying experience.

Before accepting or paying for training, ask the employer or program these exact questions:

  • Which certificate, class, and facility classification does this role support?
  • Which daily duties count as operating experience—and which duties do not?
  • Who will supervise and sign the experience verification?
  • How are hours, shift assignments, process duties, and dates recorded?
  • Does the employer pay for approved training, exams, renewals, or higher-grade preparation?
