Michigan water and wastewater operator certification

Michigan separates drinking-water operator certification from wastewater and stormwater certification. Start with the EGLE unit responsible for your actual job duties.

Decision 1

Choose the work before choosing the exam.

Drinking water

EGLE’s drinking-water unit administers exams, operator certification, and approved continuing-education records through its operator systems.

  • Treatment: source water, process control, filtration, disinfection, laboratory work.
  • Distribution: pumps, storage, pressure, mains, valves, sampling, flushing.

Wastewater

Wastewater and stormwater candidates may hold multiple credentials, including municipal, industrial, and stormwater-related certifications.

  • Treatment: biological and physical processes, solids, disinfection, compliance.
  • Collections: sewers, lift stations, force mains, I&I, cleaning, overflow response.

Do not pay yet: Michigan has more credential types than a simple “water vs wastewater” split. Match the certification to the permit and facility duties.
Decision 2

Build the application record in the right order.

Decision 3

Study from the state outline, then diagnose weak operator topics.

Michigan exam note

Follow the current EGLE application and payment instructions. Drinking-water applications currently require submitting the payment receipt with the exam application.

Decision 4

Make the job produce qualifying experience.

Before accepting or paying for training, ask the employer or program these exact questions:

  • Which certificate, class, and facility classification does this role support?
  • Which daily duties count as operating experience—and which duties do not?
  • Who will supervise and sign the experience verification?
  • How are hours, shift assignments, process duties, and dates recorded?
  • Does the employer pay for approved training, exams, renewals, or higher-grade preparation?
