Texas water and wastewater operator certification

Texas combines training, education, experience, an application, and an exam. The required combination changes by license type and class.

Decision 1

Choose the work before choosing the exam.

Drinking water

Public water system operators follow TCEQ class-specific training, education, and experience rules. The official program page currently lists a 70% passing standard and a state application fee for new water licenses.

  • Treatment: source water, process control, filtration, disinfection, laboratory work.
  • Distribution: pumps, storage, pressure, mains, valves, sampling, flushing.

Wastewater

Wastewater treatment and collection licenses have separate class requirements. Some approved college or additional training may substitute for limited experience, depending on the class.

  • Treatment: biological and physical processes, solids, disinfection, compliance.
  • Collections: sewers, lift stations, force mains, I&I, cleaning, overflow response.

Do not pay yet: Do not buy a generic “Texas operator course” until you know the exact license type and class required by your job or target facility.
Decision 2

Build the application record in the right order.

Decision 3

Study from the state outline, then diagnose weak operator topics.

Texas exam note

TCEQ uses computer-based testing for many occupational licenses. Apply and receive approval before treating the testing vendor step as complete.

Decision 4

Make the job produce qualifying experience.

Before accepting or paying for training, ask the employer or program these exact questions:

  • Which certificate, class, and facility classification does this role support?
  • Which daily duties count as operating experience—and which duties do not?
  • Who will supervise and sign the experience verification?
  • How are hours, shift assignments, process duties, and dates recorded?
  • Does the employer pay for approved training, exams, renewals, or higher-grade preparation?
